Keeping and Breeding Australian Lizards

Keeping and Breeding Australian Lizards

Author: Mike Swan
Softcover, 616 pages
Price: retail price $70.00 plus P&H

After editing and publishing Keeping and Breeding Australian Pythons in 2007—an excellent account of these snakes provided by many prominent keepers and breeders—Mike Swan has followed up with an even larger volume titled Keeping and Breeding Australian Lizards.

Although numerous guide books about Australia’s unique reptilian fauna have been published over the years—even a few small volumes about keeping and breeding certain species have appeared on the book shelves—this is the first book giving detailed accounts of how to maintain and propagate members of all families of our unique and highly interesting lizard fauna.

After a short general introduction, acknowledgements, information about the different authors and contents pages, there is a short introduction to lizards followed by a slightly longer one about Australian species. The first chapter covers captive husbandry covering everything from how to select the right lizard to cage design, heating, lighting and even the importance of keeping records. The book’s first section is concluded with a chapter on successful propagation of these reptiles written by Mike Swan himself. Following this are accounts by well known reptile breeder and producer of live foods, Rob Porter who talks about breeding livefoods, particularly insects, and Dr. Franciscus Scheelings who deals with diseases and other problems which may affect lizards in captivity.

The remaining sections cover each of the five Australian lizard families in greater detail. Written by specialists in their field—John McGrath deals with geckos, Rob Porter with flap-footed lizards, Greg Fyfe with skinks, Kieran Aland with dragons and Grant Husband and Matthew Bonnett with goannas—a vast amount of information has been packed into each of these chapters which will certainly be of great interest to the reader.

A final chapter on colour and pattern mutations, a glossary and a comprehensive index round off the 616 pages providing an easy read, even for the novice keeper—the handful of scientific terms used in the book are easily tackled with consultation of the handy glossary.

With 1016 images I can only say that less might have been more—a couple of images are shown twice and I would question whether five images of Beaked Geckos is really necessary. The choice of cover shot is also less than inspiring. At times the image captions could have provided a bit more information and there were some mix-ups with images being captioned incorrectly—but these quibbles are purely cosmetic. For example, an image with two centralian Blue-tongued Lizards enjoying a healthy salad mix, also shows a Spiny-tailed Goanna with a mouth full of greenery. A vegetarian goanna? Surely not, so was there meat amongst the vegies?

Also, there is a slip-up in the captions of two gecko shots—Thorn-tailed Geckos are a diplodactyline species and the Ring-tailed Gecko a gekkonine species. But all of this is barely cosmetic. The one disappointment for me is the colour reproduction itself which often seems very dull and without contrast and, although it probably fails to do the original photographs any justice, this book is about lizard husbandry and reproduction—hardly a glossy coffee table book. I would gladly recommend Keeping and Breeding Australian Lizards to anyone with an interest in Australian lizards, whether a novice or an old-hand. Reviewed by Gunther Schmida

Review - The Chicken Health Handbook

The Chicken Health Handbook
Author: BY GAIL DAMEROW
Softcover, 344 pages, black & white images, indexed

Price: Recommended retail price $30.00 plus P&H

Published in 1994, this title is still regarded as an essential reference for small flock owners of chicken breeds. The author, Gail Damerow, has successfully translated avian veterinarian-suited information into layman text—on all vital aspects of health, diseases and disorders that fanciers need to know. Chapters include Chicken Health, Health and Nutrition, Anatomy of a Chicken,External Parasites, Internal Parasites: Worms, Internal Parasites: Protozoa, Infectious Diseases, Environment-Related Problems,Diagnosis Guides, Postmortem Examination, Therapy, Enhancing Immunity, Incubation and Brooding, Chickens and Human Healthand Diseases and Disorders.

Unfortunately there are few photographs and those images which are featured are all in black and white, however the numerous diagrams, 62 charts and summarised points all make the concise layout easy-to-read and provide quick and efficient reference points.

Each disorder is presented as a distinct entity including clinical signs and cause, diagnosis, treatment and general information about the disorder.

The 70-page Disease and Disorders chapter is an alphabetically cross-referenced listing of disorders and a summary of 16 categorised explanations designed to detail each disease and disorder entry—ie Incidence, Progression, Incubation Period,Postmortem Findings and Diagnosis. The glossary adds even more valuable detail. The information on the prevention of disease and good management strategies is highly valuable considering poultry is often regarded as being of low monetary value and therefore not worthy of avian veterinarian attention. For breeders of poultry this fully-indexed reference is essential reading.

Review - The Complete Guide to Successful Sprouting for Parrots.

The Complete Guide to Successful Sprouting for Parrots
Author: BY LESLIE MORAN
Softcover, 110 pages, black & white images, indexed

Price: Recommended retail price $23.00 plus $6.00 P&H (Aust.)

Leslie Moran has written extensively for international publications and is particularly known for her regular holistic column in Parrots Magazine UK.

Leslie’s philosophy—that sprouted living vegetables boost the immune and digestive systems—has been proven correct today. Her own birds were fed what appeared to be a balanced diet—commercial pellets, a dry seed parrot mix supplemented by fresh fruits and vegetablesand a cooked legume and grain preparation.

After research, Leslie discovered the nutritious value of sprouting grains and seeds, leading her to phase out some of the commercial pellets—which contained a chemical preservative—and seed, opting for organic pellet and sprouted foods. There was a marked difference in the appearance of her birds.

Besides her own personal experience, much of the information on how to sprout and the positive results that can be gained by feeding sprouts to parrots has been provided to Leslie by knowledgeable breeders who have decades of experience with parrots. Their expertise has contributed to Leslie’s understanding of the healthful and beneficial effects of feeding sprouts, and of how to grow sprouts for parrots in a variety of climates.

The book’s chapters cover a number of questions including Why Feed Sprouts?; Organic or Commercial Foods—Is There a Difference?;Successful Sprouting; Caring for Your Sprouts; Now, Who Will Eat Them?; Nutritious Meals for the Whole Family. The five Appendices cover Resources and Additional Information, Trouble Shooting, Preventative Nutrition for Dogs and Cats, Homemade Egg Food and General Sprouting Guidelines.

Following are a couple of acclamations from various bird breeders:
‘In summary, an excellent compilation of sprouting knowledge—very informative and easy to follow. Coming from an organic background of feeding birds, it is great to get clear and accurate nutritional information on the need, care and feeding of sprouts.’
Ella Galik, ASC Judge, Canary and Finch breeder for 40 years
‘I urge people to read this book and to take to heart what sprouted seeds can do for a captive psittacine. We have been feeding ourparrots primarily organic, sprouted and raw foods for over 20 years. In all that time we have NEVER had a single case of sickness in our flock. Accidents yes, sickness no. Our adopted parrots—who had formerly been fed poorly—have regained their flight ability and intensified plumage colouration. These birds are now well into their thirties and forties. Sprouts and organic fruit seeds are alive. They carry the gift of life itself!’
EB Cravens
‘A must read! Moran takes many years of sensible environmental, holistic and organic practices and guides you in their application through an easy-to-read format. This book will improve the health of your parrots, pets and yourself. She has unlocked the key.’
Linda Torony, Organic Farmer, Master Gardener, Agriscience Instructor
This title is an essential reference for all responsible avian keepers who place a value on the health of their birds.

Encyclopedia of Aviculture

Encyclopedia of Aviculture
Author: Glen Holland

Hardcover, 832 pages

Price:
Australia: $150.00 plus $20.00 P&H
Overseas: $136.37 plus P&H

This 832-page, indexed hardcover tome provides everything that the serious aviculturist would need to know about any species that they keep or would be attracted to keep.
Glen Holland, a bird keeper and wildlife lover since youth, embarked on a career in wildlife and habitat management, conservation and environmental education, leading to the current position of Director of Auckland Zoo. Together with other recognised avicultural experts from around the world, Glen formulated the in-depth information presented in this encyclopedia.
General chapters include Stress Management, Control of Vermin, Propogation of Livefood, Avicultural Management and Compatible Species, each chapter supported by explanatory colour photographs and diagrams.
The aviculturist is provided with proven, practical methods for the successful management and propagation of most of the families of birds in the world. Species accounts vary from the world's largest, the Ostrich, to the diminutive hummingbirds and waxbills and include avicultural rarities, such as the Congo Peafowl, the Kiwi, the Saddle-bill Stork, bee-eaters, swallows and Red Siskins. Also included are vital, practical components for avicultural success that are universally applicable to a wide range of species, eg Diet, Compatibility with Other Species, Habitat Requirements, Incubation and Handraising Techniques.
Aviculturists today are faced with the challenge of establishing captive-bred strains that are no longer reliant on replenishments from wild stock, while attempting to reduce the current rate of species extinctions. Glen's commendable desire that this book will assist aviculturists in achieving this goal is certainly achieved.
This title is more suited to the serious aviculturist who would appreciate the wealth of research and extensive information provided on a vast array of species. Certainly deserving of a valuable place in such a person's library.

Australia: $75.00 plus $13.00 P&H
Overseas: $68.18 plus P&H

Until now a definitive manual has not been readily available to the keepers of Pekin Robins and softbills - small insectivorous and frugivorous birds.
The author, Peter Karsten, born in Germany, is highly respected for his knowledge gained over 30 years as an aviculturist, zoo keeper and zoo director in Canada. Peter is also a talented painter and sculptor. His detailed drawings support the text in the margins throughout the book. And his illustrative watercolours and colour plates depict each of the species beautifully.
Designed as an instructional text to provide information and techniques for managing and breeding Pekin Robins and other small softbill birds ex situ, this volume is the most comprehensive and current handbook on this topic, providing the reader with much more than a set of simple procedures and lists. Topics covered include in-depth explanations on Housing, Acquisition, Handrearing, Feeding, Food Cultivation and Health Care. The extensive list of softbill species range from mesias, minlas, yuhinas, laughing thrushes, tits, bulbuls and white-eyes to flycatchers, robins, tanagars and honeycreepers.
The approximately 100 topics discussed in this book are organised by a decimal numbering index which cross-references various topics within the text. Topics often have relevant expanded information in another chapter, and the decimal numbers indicate the chapter and subsections where this additional information can be found.
As well as promoting the conservation of species, Peter has provided extensive information on all aspects of softbill captive husbandry suited to both the novice and experienced enthusiast.

When I heard that a publication on Australian pythons was in the pipeline I waited anxiously hoping that it would live up to the hype. Because my feelings about this book are somewhat mixed, I will present a candid albeit personal review. I will therefore ignore the book review standard and start at the end.

Would I recommend this book? Definitely yes. Is this book better than previous publications? Definitely yes. Should this book be on the shelf of both beginners and experienced keepers? Definitely yes. The table of contents covers most aspects of captive husbandry, breeding, diseases and disorders, and colour and pattern mutations, as well as species accounts of 20 species and subspecies. However, some of the general chapters give the impression of a rushed job or limited page space. The sections on substrate, housing, heating and feeding gloss briefly over the basics while managing to cleverly avoid any current controversial topics of discussion (eg the pros and cons of substrate choice and myths surrounding preferred food items).

The chapters on breeding were simple and encouraging. Dr Scheeling BVSc wrote the Diseases and Disorders section and did a great job in some areas such as the cause of diseases. The following species chapters were all written by different authorsa veritable whos who of snake breeding. However the frustrating aspect of individual and distinctive writing styles was that some authors presented only their way of doing things rather than suggesting a range of ways to appeal to a wider audience. It, therefore, became necessary to read all adjacent chapters on species within the same genus to glean other possible options for care. However, this very personal style of writing became priceless when the authors discussed methods of dealing with difficult hatchling feeders.

Throughout the book the photographs were exceptional in quality. I was pleased to see the chapter on Colour and Pattern Mutations but was sorely disappointed when I saw that most of the images were of overseas mutations while ignoring Australian examples. The basic genetic mechanisms covered were quite technical for the novice. I will reiterate that I do find this book well worth the price and an essential book for all python enthusiasts. The Parrot Problem Solver: Finding Solutions to Aggressive Behaviour
Author: Barbara Heidenreich
Pages: 192
Price:
Australia: $34.00 plus P&H
Overseas: $30.91 plus P&H
ISBN: 0 7938 0562 7

Aggressive behaviour is something that many companion parrot owners will unfortunately experience at some stage in their relationship with their bird. Traditionally, the use of punishment and negative reinforcement strategies has been advocated to deal with aggression in companion parrots. Barbara Heidenreich has set a new standard in companion parrot literature with The Parrot Problem Solver, a text that is focussed on managing aggressive behaviour while building highly positive relationships between parrots and their owners. Barbara presents the most progressive, and positive, suite of methodologies and insights into using positive reinforcement-based approaches, in close combination with a well-developed sensitivity to our parrots' natural behaviours, to achieve effective behaviour change.

So what are some of the highlights of this wonderful book?

Barbara sets up the thinking for effective parrot problem solving by offering a section on parrot behaviour in the wild.

Of enormous benefit to parrot owners is the section on reading bird body language in the context of recognising potential aggression and avoiding conflict. Almost all cases of physical aggression, resulting in an actual bite being experienced from companion parrots, are avoidable if the owner is equipped with a tool kit of awareness of the intricacies of parrot body language.

Barbara then breaks down aggressive behaviour into categories, according to the foundations of the behaviour and the contexts within which it might be observed.

Eleven 'real world' scenarios are provided at the end of the book to fully contextualise the methodologies advocated and how they can be applied.

The Parrot Problem Solver represents incredible value for money and should be considered an essential addition to the library of all parrot enthusiasts.

Barbara, with over a decade of experience as a professional animal trainer, achieves this with a style that is exceptionally digestible for both the novice and experienced parrot enthusiast alike.
